I’m asking that you support “Talking Animals,” and me, in our Fund Drive show Wednesday, June 5, 9am-10am ET–but, ideally, BEFORE then!
June is also when we celebrate the 10th anniversary of “Talking Animals”!!!
Wish us Happy Anniversary by pledging! We have killer tickets to see Dylan/Wilco/MMJ. AND to see Daniel Tosh. Etc. Details below.
That hour of our fund drive show on June 5–from 9-10am that morning–is the only time our show will be “credited” with your donation.
If a pledge comes in afterward, it’s credited to another show, but you can give beforehand… how ’bout now?
Historically, I’ve been assigned an incredibly huge fundraising goal for an hour show–last fund drive it was $2600! I haven’t been told the June 5 goal yet, but I do already know the only prospect of achieving the goal is to get a lot of pledges before June 5.
There are four different–fast, easy– ways to support “Talking Animals”/me:
- E-mail me [email protected] PRIOR to June 5, with your contact information (e-mail & /or phone), amount you’d like to pledge, & I’ll be in touch to complete a pledge card for you.
- Donate to our “Tip Jar,” also PRIOR to June 5, by clicking here
- Call 813-238-8001 on Weds. June 5, from 9am-10am ET
- Visit www.WMNF.org on Weds. June 5, 9am-10am ET, and pledge online
Here are the exclusive “premiums”–thank you gifts–I’ll be offering for those who donate at various financial levels. You can only get these by supporting “Talking Animals” –e-mail me at [email protected] for more details, including pledge prices–and they include:
AMAZING TICKETS: BOB DYLAN, WILCO, BOB WEIR & MY MORNING JACKET at the MidFlorida Credit Union Amphitheatre at the FL State Fairgrounds
ONE PAIR of tickets to see the “AmericanaramA Festival of Music,” June 27 at the MidFlorida Credit Union Amphitheatre (at one time called Ford Amphitheatre, more recently known as 1-800-Ask-Gary) at the Florida State Fairgrounds, headlined by Bob Dylan and also featuring Wilco and My Morning Jacket. Plus, on this Tampa tour stop of “AmericanaramA,” Bob Weir is additionally slated to perform. We have managed to procure a pair of house seats–meaning they’re among the very best seats in the Amphitheatre for this concert as a special thank you gift/”premium” for the right pledge in support of “Talking Animals.” Specifically, the location of the seats: Section 7, Row N, seats 3 & 4. You can see exactly where these seats are for the configuration of this night’s concert here.
LIMITED EDITION “TALKING ANIMALS” T-SHIRT
The “Talking Animals” world is currently characterized by many important new aspects–fabulous new theme song (created by the fabulous Rebekah Pulley), new logo, new time slot, new website–as we also march toward the 10th anniversary of the program! To mark and celebrate these things, we created a new, limited edition “Talking Animals” T-shirt. It’s modeled here by Mike Strauss, and it’s clear that wearing one brings great joy. So, wouldn’t you like to own one? Of course you would. Designed by artist extraordinaire Mike Beardsley, we have a limited quantity of shirts. (Hey, I’m paying for ‘em out of my own pocket!) But right now, we do have all sizes, and we hope you’ll support the show by pledging for one of these cool shirts, and wearing it proudly.
ONE PAIR of tickets to see Daniel Tosh performing June 27, 2013, at the Straz Center (Carol Morsani Hall) in Tampa, part of Tosh’s monthlong June Gloom Tour. Tosh, who grew up in Titusville, FL, is the host of ”Tosh.O,” the wildly popular Comedy Central program, part of a highly successful career he’s developed, perhaps telegraphed when he made his network television debut on “The Late Show With David Letterman.” That was in 2001, and he’s since appeared on “The Tonight Show,” “Jimmy Kimmel Live!,” starred in his own stand-up specials on Comedy Central, released three comedy CD and executive produced the animated series “Brickleberry.” We have a pair of awesome seats–they are from Daniel himself–for his 7pm show June 27 at the Straz/Morsani.

ONE WEEK’S STAY One Bedroom, One bathroom ocean-view condo in Poipu Beach, 3rd Floor Unit on the South shore of Kauai, sleeps 4, incredible view (this photo was shot from the balcony; depending on time of year, can see whales, dolphin, turtles, etc) SUBJECT TO AVAILABILITY, NOT TRANSFERABLE We offer a pledge price that’s about half the going rate–an incredible deal, especially for a condo that sleeps four…which means four people (or two couples) can share the cost. We also offer a further discount for those who pledge for the condo before the fund drive show on June 5. More info about the condo here.
TWO copies of “Attempting Normal,” the new memoir by Marc Maron, the veteran comedian whose twice-weekly podcast, “WTF,” has become widely–and wildly–acclaimed and celebrated, while also becoming perhaps the most popular entry in the elephantine comic-does-podcast genus. Maron also now stars in his own television series on IFC, which premiered just about the time “Attempting Normal” was published. The book is a fun, breezy read, unflinchingly honest–just like Maron on “WTF”–with engaging tales about his parents, his career, his ex-wives, his cats and other animals, and more. It’s drawn high praise everywhere from The New York Times to Salon to Splitsider. Maron was a guest on “Talking Animals” in February of 2011 (and not long after, gave us a nice shout-out at a SXSW symposium), and was kind enough to send us two copies of “Attempting Normal,” specially signed for “Talking Animals” listeners.
TICKETS TO SEE CESAR MILLAN AT THE STRAZ CENTER JUNE 15
Cesar Millan, known for many years as the “Dog Whisperer”–in large part because he hosted a National Geographic series of the same name–makes a rare live appearance June 15 at the Straz Center in Tampa. Joined at the Straz appearance by his famous four-legged companion, Junior, Millan will discuss his philosophies and methods, then present examples with live demonstrations involving multiple dogs. There will also be an audience Q&A session, enabling some of those attending to ask Millan questions about their own dogs. We have two pairs of terrific tickets for this Cesar Millan appearance.
TICKETS TO LIVE “TA” ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION JUNE 19
On June 19, “Talking Animals” will celebrate its 10th anniversary with a live broadcast of animal songs performed by notable musicians from the Tampa music scene. I launched the program on June 13, 2003 in California at KUCI (the show first aired on WMNF in Nov. of 2005), and to mark the occasion we’ll be broadcasting that morning from WMNF’s Live Music Studio, joined by local luminaries Rebekah Pulley (who created our wonderful new opening theme song), Ronny Elliott, Judy Tampa, and a handful of others in a full band set-up, backing these & others singing animal songs, both covers and originals. We’re offering a limited number of tickets to join the celebration as audience members in the Live Music Studio–as an exclusive “Talking Animals” premium you can pledge for on, or before, our fund drive show June 5. We’re also offering a little package of sorts, involving a ticket to attend the live broadcast celebration AND a “Talking Animals” T-shirt.
COPIES OF DEBUT CD BY WILD FLAG–CARRIE BROWNSTEIN’S BAND
FIVE copies of “Wild Flag,” the debut CD by Wild Flag, the new band featuring Carrie Brownstein, who previously led seminal rock trio Sleater-Kinney. (Wild Flag’s powerhouse drummer Janet Weiss is the other carryover from Sleater-Kinney.) Perhaps more famously now, Brownstein, alongside SNL’s Fred Armisen, is the co-creator and co-star of the celebrated sketch series “Portlandia.” During a conversation on “Talking Animals” June 6, 2012, Brownstein–a huge dog lover–explained that she spent much of her time between the demise of Sleater-Kinney and the launching of Wild Flag and “Portlandia” volunteering at the Oregon Humane Society, working so hard and effectively she was named Volunteer Of The Year. A Wild Flag poster will accompany each CD.
GIFT CARDS FOR TOUR OF TAMPA’S BIG CAT RESCUE
Gift cards for a tour of Tampa’s Big Cat Rescue, the largest accredited sanctuary in the world dedicated entirely to abused and abandoned big cats, with more than 100+ big cats and other animals living there. As Big Cat Rescue founder and CEO Carole Baskin explained in her most recent in-studio visit to “Talking Animals” on November 28, 2012, these tours are carefully designed to sidestep animals whose history and temperament preclude exposure to the public. And, Baskin noted, the tours offer tremendous educational value, including spurring visitors to call their local legislators immediately after completing the tour.
SIGNED COPIES OF “DEATH AT SEAWORLD”
TWO copies of “Death At SeaWorld: Shamu and The Dark Side of Killer Whales In Captivity,” an exhilarating journalistic achievement of reporting, reseach and writing by investigative reporter and New York Times bestselling author David Kirby. Kirby delivers a sweeping examination of orcas in the wild, orcas in captivity, deep description and analysis of the incident in which a 12,000-pound orca named Tilikum killed trainer Dawn Brancheau at SeaWorld Orlando in February of 2010. Turns out the book is a companion piece to “Blackfish,” a new documentary film, with much the same focus, that generated tremendous excitement and acclaim at Sundance. Each copy of “Death At SeaWorld” is signed (with a different inscription) by David Kirby, who was a guest on “Talking Animals”July 25, 2012
DOUBLE EXCLUSIVE: LIVE EELS TWO-CD SET
THREE copies of “Tremendous Dynamite.” You may not be as bonkers about EELS as we are–we adore the band, not to mention their great catalog is laced with animal songs, we interviewed singer-songwriter-frontman E on “Talking Animals” in July 0f 2009–but even a moderate fan would be pretty excited about “Tremendous Dynamite”: A double-CD featuring 40 tracks recorded live on the EELS 2010 and 2011 world tours, 20 from each tour, and both sets recorded at First Avenue in Minneapolis–one of the EELS’ favorite venues (and Prince’s, too, for that matter). Amidst the 40 songs from the two tours featured on “Tremendous Dynamite,” only one song overlaps, “My Beloved Monster.” And “Tremendous Dynamite” is exclusively available at the EELS 2013 world tour shows–or by pledging $50 in support of “Talking Animals.”
